Programme script, includes essay on witch persecutions by Dr Roberta Anderson

A gripping and haunting play about sex, women, fear and religion, from the BAFTA-winning writer Rebecca Lenkiewicz.

Walkern, Hertfordshire, 1712. After decades free from witch hunts, Walkern’s cunning woman Jane Wenham is blamed for a tragic death – and charged with witchcraft. A terrifying ordeal begins, as the village is torn between those who want to save her life, and those who claim to want to save her soul… Inspired by real events, Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s beautiful play is alive with the mysteries of nature, sex and the supernatural, and blasts society’s hunger to find and create witches.

Rebecca Lenkiewicz won a Fringe First for her play Soho: A Tale of Table Dancers, and her playsThe Night Season and Her Naked Skin both premiered at the National Theatre. The latter was the first and only time a female playwright had original work premiered in the large Olivier Theatre. She won a BAFTA for co-writing Ida, which also won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film.

“A fascinating piece of history skilfully brought to life” –Financial Times

“A heady brew of sex and sorcery” -The Guardian

“In 2015, hunting for witches seems as absurd as anything in your average episode of ‘Blackadder’. But Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s powerful new play makes tipping old women in rivers or attributing magical powers to their pets feel real, and deadly serious” -Time Out
