Letters to George
Predominantly a director of new plays, Max Stafford-Clark was used to having a playwright in the rehearsal room. So when he came to direct George Farquhar’s The Recruiting Officer, he decided to strike up a one-sided dialogue with the writer of the Restoration comedy, in the form of these entertaining and illuminating letters. The result is a vivid rehearsal diary, and a clear and practical insight into how a play is staged. It also discusses some of the genesis of Our Country’s Good.

Taking Stock
Compiled in collaboration with Philip Roberts, Taking Stock uses interviews, diary entries and other sources to look at the creation of nine of Max’s most influential productions. Our Country’s Good by Timberlake Wertenbaker, Rita Sue and Bob Too by Andrea Dunbar,  Serious Money by Caryl Churchill, Fanshen by David Hare and Some Explicit Polaroids by Mark Ravenhill are among the shows explored.

Our Country’s Good: Page To Stage
A definitive guide to the Olivier Award-winning play, its history, its themes and ways to rehearse and stage it, written by Max and Out of Joint’s former Education Manager Maeve McKeown.
